IT Hubs @ Na Phong Village

Our aim was to teach basic IT knowledge to the villagers. For school teachers, using Microsoft Excel can allow them to compute their students' class scores easily. This can save them a lot of time compared to writing test scores manually in their notebooks. For students like Sok Sai, whose noble aspiration is to become a doctor, learning the use of the computer will come in handy for his studies in future.
Every evening, we held IT classes for the villagers and school teachers in two makeshift IT Hubs. The temporary 'IT Hubs' were actually the homes of our village neighbours! It was very generous and kind of them to lend a space for us to conduct classes. We are infinitely thankful, as while classes were ongoing, they couldn't watch tv in their living space, and they also had to provide their electricity and fans for us. The permanent IT Hub is already being set up in a neighbouring school, and hopefully it will be done soon!!!

Our PAKOL boys also single-handedly fixed tables and installed the computers hours before our first IT class. They got so sweaty under the Laos summer heat, but they didn't complain at all. So manly!

We decided it was better to teach our students individually, so that we can focus all our attention on them, and we can better monitor their progress and understanding too.

Our classes were well-received, and it was very heartwarming to see villagers coming from other villages just to attend our classes. Our first lesson involved teaching them how to switch on/off the computer, using the mouse, learning how to access Microsoft Word, doing some typing on Word (both in Lao and English), saving document, and creating their own folders. It was very touching and fulfilling to see our students progress day by day.

"I am 14 years old.

I like sports.

I like ronaldo.

I love you only one in the world."

After a few days of practicing on Word, we decided it was time to introduce Excel to them! The teachers were very excited to be using Excel, as we taught them how to use formulas to add and subtract numbers. We also taught them to use printers, to print out the work they have done and bring them home to show their family.

The younger kids were also very excited to try the computers. However, because our classes prioritized school teachers and the older teenagers, we allocated the last half an hour of our classes for the kids instead. It was quite amazing to see how fast they were with picking up computer skills! We taught them how to use Paint, and they were able to draw beautiful pictures by the end of the day.

Last but not least, we have our mega awesome IT team to thank for coming out with the entire course programme. They made an IT manual from scratch, laminated pictures and Lao translation for the villagers, so that the villagers will be able to refer to the manual for trouble-shooting problems in future. Good job everyone!!! A job well done!
