[PHASE 1: LSLP]

8th March 2015 - Darul Ihsan Orphanage

Today, we embarked on our 1st Local Service Learning Project (LSLP) at Darul Ihsan Girls' Orphanage. We splitted into teams of 2 - A team for Upper Primary and another for Lower Primary and conducted the lesson over 2 hours.

Our lessons were focused on basic English as it was indentified to be an area of weakness for the kids. As each students have different speeds of learning and attention span, we decided to split the facilitator:student ratio to 1:1 with a main teacher conducting the lesson.

Lessons were conducted as interactive and interestingly as possible to make sure the students participate actively in class. It was still a challenge to keep the lesson going with the many different needs of each student. So, we would be looking at a better class plan for our next session!
We would also like to put forth our heartfelt thanks to National Geographic for the sponsorship they provided for our Local Service Learning Project with Darul Ihsan Orphanage. The sponsorship has allowed us to conduct our project more effectively and is much appreciated by our friends from the orphanage.

The learning points from Phase 1 will definitely come in handy for our upcoming OSLP in May at Laos, where we will be teaching Primary 3-5 kids basic English. Over there, we have to also consider the language barriers. Speaking of which, all of us have been hard at work learning basic Lao! Special shoutout to our Admin Team for the language lessons every meeting :) Job well done team!
